Republican
July 1854- The Republican Party was founded in Jackson, Michigan.
The republicans sought to place national interest above all else,
which would include the states. One of the first things the republicans
wanted to do was end slavery, which Abraham Lincoln was a part of
but was assassinated soon after.
Now where does the elephant come from? Thomas Nast, famously known
for creating political cartoons, had illustrated a donkey scaring away all the other
animals in a forest. One of the animals was an elephant that represented the
republican vote. So after, the elephant became the party symbol not just the vote.
